That hills in the west idea doesn't make much sense anyway as this offense is going, because they are already flanked there. They might have had the idea to have these lines to fall back to and then just bombard the city, but as things are, Russia isn't stupid to just went into the city into hard and risky melee, but comes from the flanks, including those western lines. The west seems to think that warfare is all about having a nice theory and stay with it, instead of adapting, likely because they are used to just stomp a far inferior enemy, who can barely fight back to begin with.
