Random rant here but bear with me. One of the things that frustrates me most about the auto industry is just how much things like “image,” “perception,” “being seen in a __________,” owner typecasting, demographic stereotypes, etc are in the car market. This is extremely idealistic, but I just wish we could live in a world where those kinds of things simply weren’t factors AT ALL in the way we look at cars. I grew up on (borderline unhealthy amounts of) Alex on Autos, and one of the things that drew me to him and I loved most about him was that these things just simply weren’t a part of his automotive worldview, especially in his earlier videos, and that really shaped the way I see the auto industry personally. His reviews of the Hyundai Genesis and Kia K900 (Lincoln MKZ, too) from around 2015 were great examples of this. I’ve also been valeting part time at a Subaru dealer here in Seattle this summer and our service director is literally a 50 or 60 something year old woman with a WRX hatchback! THAT’S what I wish we’d see more of in the car market - people who DON’T fit in the stereotypical demographic boxes of cars buying them anyway just because they enjoy them and don’t care what other people have to say about it. I also think this has the potential to change so many other aspects of our culture, but that’s an even deeper rabbit hole to go down. Anyway thanks for coming to my TedTalk.
