***** The gunman in Tunesia had a university education. Same with many of the 9/11 hijackers. Not really something you can do if you're poor. As a side note, comparing nominal income of people in different countries is deceptive. The $2 a day will carry you a lot further in developing countries than it would in the US.

***** My reasoning here is that if they have received a university education, it wasn't poverty that drove them to terrorism. For example, the gunman of the attack in Tunesia studied Aviation. Among the 9/11 attackers there were quite a few engineers. As for the income, what I'm talking about is purchasing power parity (PPP). It's not that important here, I just wanted to point out that even though nominal average incomes differ, so do prices. You couldn't live off $2/day in a Western country, but if you live in Africa, you can buy a lot more with that.
