I think a better approach would be a few smaller countries forming a coalition, like Poland, Germany, France and maybe the UK. I think the US should really stay out of this to not have this escalate to a nuclear war.

@john hodgson Russia doesn't stand a chance against the US in a conventional war, and nuclear weapons are the only way to stand up against the US for them. So it's not having nuclear weapons that provokes a nuclear response, but for them having no other option. So you want to present Russia with a situation where they're not clearly outmatched. So any coalition should be small enough to be below that threshold.
