  1. All this talk about ethnicity and DNA makes no sense today. In the Soviet Union the country's population was very mixed. The Soviet government populated the sparsely populated regions of Russia with Belarusians, Ukrainians, and residents of southern Russia. For example, I lived in Russian Karelia and at school half of my classmates had Ukrainian surnames, because their ancestors came there forcibly in Soviet times. In the eastern regions of Ukraine, the situation is reversed, there are many descendants of those who came there from the territory of modern Russia
