Russia already had direct borders with NATO in the west and in the east before invasion of Ukraine in 2014. Where did you see NATO in Ukraine in 2014, they didn't even apply for NATO membership. Both Russia and Ukraine were members of the same NATO program (Partnership for Peace) from 1994 until Putin decided to follow in the footsteps of Nazi Germany and started a war for territory to resurrect an old empire. The fact that Russia didn't even object to Finland's NATO membership proved that the whole "mortal threat from NATO encroachment" was simply Russian propaganda all along.
