This operation was expected to be so amazing that Russians even had a song written "Hostomel Paratroopers" to glorify the heroic Spetsnaz that "fought against all Ukrainian forces but never surrendered the airport", obviously it didn't age very well. The Primorsky Court of Odesa later sentenced regional police chief Dmitry Fuchedzhi to 15 years in prison, but he fled to Russia. So, in the middle of Russian invasion (Feb 2014), Russian criminals started to kill Ukrainians in Odessa (May 2014), instigated violence which led to the fire, and fled to Russia. Just another page in the book of Russian aggression.
