He bought and extensively promoted the Russian "mortal threat from NATO expansion" excuse when Russia started the war in 2014, and it worked quite well for years, but only until Russia failed to object to Finland's NATO membership. This fact proved that it was simply Russian propaganda all along, and Putin himself confirmed this. When Putin was asked why Russia didn't object to Finland's NATO membership, he said because Russia does not have any territorial disputes with Finland, so it is just a war for territory. Putin already moved on to other excuses for starting the war, like medieval history, but Mearshimer is still pedaling the old Russian BS because he is now too invested in it personally.
