At least a million Afghans died during the Soviet intervention. But this did not break the resistance of the population. The whole country hated the occupiers. Soviet planes and artillery wiped out towns and villages and their inhabitants, and shooting and torture took place at every turn. Other former republics of the USSR, now independent states, no longer fight for Russia. Instead, Moscow uses troops from Kalmykia, Buryatia and Dagestan as cannon fodder in Ukraine.
