  1. breathLP It is special, though, as "ß" itself is a merger of long "s" and regular "s". Usage of the long "s" varied over time, especially in English, where "ß" was also sometimes used under conditions (although in English it wasn't used to end any word as far as I know; instead they kept long and regular "s" separate for the end). English was certainly more elegant looking before about 1800 when mass printing eventually killed long "s". If everyone still wrote in cursive properly you would easily tell the difference in writing.
