If they cost-cut to that degree on such a critical area you can imagine what they do elsewhere.

@mzee5533 Kilmer is a hack but it's one thing I can agree with.

11:50 If you're good with soldering I'm sure you can crack open the assembly.

@MarkCalica Oh yeah. D4S is a great solution and VW just seems to have ill intentions not giving us their system.

@Seb C I assumed the comment was from a vehicle quality perspective. And they certainly were not. I would much rather have a Ford-era Volvo than one now. Near the end (global recession) it could not be helped how they were doing. All automakers were struggling badly. Of course that sweet and evil endless Chinese capital brought the company back. But their cars now are, hilariously, statistically less reliable than they were in the Ford-era.

@fcpeuro Factory service manual for '05-'09 says to turn it lock to lock with engine off several times and top off, start engine, and then turn it lock to lock slowly 10 times while keeping it at the end position at least 2 seconds. Says nothing about wheels being off ground.

@peterwonaprize That's simply not really true. Even if you don't include the Four-C suspension, the average Toyota uses McPherson strut with stamped steel arms in comparison to Volvo's high aluminum usage and rear multilink. There are more bushings and components cost more. No, I don't think they still use that inferior material on P2. In fact, I don't think my 2005 ever had it.

I know you're doing another vid on problems per model, but I'll add a few: The pre-2005 power steering line design is inferior and fails more often. Oil filler cap seal fails often and leaks oil all into ignition coils/plugs if not careful (fixed on later P3 engines). Exterior rubber trim fails like all other cars but some of it is impossible to find anymore and you're left with watching it disintegrate or paying a fortune (even Volvo stopped producing some for my 2005). The PCV design was mediocre and the plastic compressor-side intake cracks (replace with metal). 2005-2009 plastic headlights are unnecessarily expensive too.

Hmm. That's not true at all.

@Johnny Blue I've had experience with all kinds of Ford-era Volvos and they definitely took a step in the wrong direction under Geely Holding (powertrain wise). There isn't a more boring powertrain in the industry right now for what Volvo charges.

Its a rather complex suspension and high quality suspension so, of course, it isn't as cheap as a Toyota. The rubber weatherstripping and mounts, etc., all fail in other cars too due to age.

At $250-$400 each, you may as well try taking them out/leaving them in and detailing them with one of the many sanding/polishing methods and adding a new protective layer before you spend much more (especially on the plastic lens units where you replace the entire thing!).
