There are a record number of untrue myths about the cars perpetuated by people

W220 is most reliable S-Class mechanically with the indestructible M112/113 and 722.6 transmission. Airmatic is reliable compared to ABC and super easy to replace yourself. Corrosion issues from a wrong solution at factory were fixed by 2003, but there are still plenty of pre-2003 cars that didn't have terrible rust issues. That said, I'd have to pick the S70 or S73 Touring from the 140 series. It just can't get better than those for me

Never heard it referred to that. They sold very well because the price was significantly less than the S500 with less standard features.

@matt33876 Yeah, they greatly overestimated the life of the anti-corrosion solution used at the factory. This resulted in the majority of cars suffering from rust issues. But they varied wildly. It's not a condemnation of the car's engineering itself, though

Unlikely that a 722.6 is failing that soon. I've seen them with 700k miles shifting as new if maintained. It may have worn plunger valves and needs part 68942-05K which revises the sleeves with o-rings. Conveniently, LegitStreetCars just uploaded a video covering this common issue after such mileage with 722.6.

Everything could be optioned on the S430. But most weren't ordered that way. Choosing a base S500 instead may have been more appealing

The facelift actually made it worse to me. Original design was led by Bruno Sacco and think it was done very well
