+dkail08 That is one of the most ridiculously false statement ever. Pound for pound most green solution (including electric cars) are better for the environment than the thing they sought to replace.
21
Ion engine produce too little thrust to escape Earth gravity so they will never replace chemical rocket for that purpose , at all. They do have better specific impulse which makes them perfect for long distance travel over a long time . NASA as well as other space agencies have been using them for quite some time now.
16
I'm very skeptical of this.
13
Not really.

+dkail08 The only disadvantage that EV have compared to ICE is the range and upfront cost (maintenance wise EV is actually better). But neither of those are environmental impact. If we really go from the true environmental cost from procuring the resource needed to build both types of vehicles and their maintenance throughout their lifetime then EV have a smaller footprint on the environmental in total vs that of an ICE vehicle. As I said, the disadvantage of EV compared to ICE isn't environmental.

I already knows that ion engine is already used by multiple space agencies. I mean look at the Dawn mission for example. What I am sceptical about is the claim that it could replace chemical rockets . Ion engine are useless for launching anything from surface to orbital velocity due to its extremely low thrust.
3
+Nomenclarify It's the combination of the title and editing . Notice that every time they said chemical rockets the footage cuts to launches ? This can and have crated false impression.
3
+Nomenclarify You seem particularly offended at someone criticising the valid faults of this video. I wonder why ?
3
+NafiuGamer They never said it, but the way this video is edited makes it seem that they're inferring that they'll replace chemical rockets for orbital launch (instead of their true purpose) . In fact if you go through the comment section here, you'll find quite a few people who mistakenly though that this will completely replace chemical rockets.
2
+Nomenclarify I take this either means that you failed to see anything wrong with a video that immediately opens with saying " this tech could be better than a Falcon 9 rocket" (it's literally the first 5 second of the video)... OR You decided to abandon all pretence of being interested in conversation and instead reveal yourself to be a troll all along.
2
Dude, you can build these type of farms in middle of the ocean or even hundreds of meter below the surface of the Earth or ocean (where there is no sunlight at all) .
2
You do know that ion engines have been used for decades by NASA and other Space Agencies, right? Google Dawn Mission for example.
2
And not even by the US altogether. Juno and Dawn ( both by NASA) used ion drives for example.
2
Space and Boeng.

Nuclear energy is pretty clean , its is practically a green energy at this point.Unfortunately the uninformed and irrational "green" lobbyist have successfully made a bogeyman out of nuclear to the point that it's give very low priority by the majority of developed world governments.
1
Now you're just trolling .
1
ADDED NOTE: Google/youtube notification system is really messed up. I didn't receive notification of of activity on several thread and comment (including this one) .
1
+Nomenclarify Nice strawmam . That have nothing to do at all with my problems with this video. +Yusen’s Midnight Diner Ion Thrusters as it used by NASA, JAXA, ESA and other space agencies are proven and well documented technology. What they're claiming to be doing in this video isn't.
1
Voyager, Pioneer , Dawn ...Google them.
1
And hopefully not be another Elizabeth Holmes .
1
Depends on the efficiency and thrust of that Ion Engine.
1
Size. Her ion engines seem to be a lot smaller.
1
+GreenPigKing "it’d be cool if restaurants everywhere had built in wireless charging pads though." Based on the current efficiency of wireless energy transfer, I would say that is a horrible idea which will have huge negative environmental impact.
1
A lot more.
1
+C O What you're describing are solar sail, not ion engine. Ion engine do still need to carry its fuel ( like Helium or Xenon etc) as well power plant . Example of spacecraft that uses Ion engine is NASA's Dawn mission.
1
NASA isn't competing with either one of those companies nor is is their mission to do so , they'll all about research and exploration. .In fact NASA funded Space X (saving the company from bankruptcy in the process) and is Space X biggest client/customer/partner. In fact NASA already is using ion drives on its space probes while neither Space X or Blue Origin even have plans to do so .
1
To be fair..We really don't know the specs on her Ion Drive Chips..
1
You do know that all those space junk will eventually fall back to Earth , right?
1
You said it yourself : Efficiency. Ion engine have a much higher specific impulse than chemical rockets.
1
UMM......Yes ,it will. Do you even learn basic physics in school?
1
Technically it is possible and is a far better option than chemical rockets for the same purpose.
1
Still much faster than chemical rockets, though. Ion engine is impractical for that purpose. A better use is for colonisation using a generation ship or one equipped with suspended animation technology (such as cryo ) where time isn't really a concern. Of course we have none of the technology for both (unlike ion drive) , so they are pretty much sci fi at this point.
1
Hence why I said that ion-drive isn't sci-fi like generation ship and suspended animation are. We still don't have the tech (or even knowledge) to keep human being alive for long(or extremely long) period of time in open space.
1
Stra Wars isn't exactly scientifically accurate.
1
Tiny ion engine are an innovation . This chip seem to be smaller than most Ion engine in operation.
