That is because that is false. Tesla have the effective life spans of around 20-25 years before the battery became degraded enough that you need to change them. Most Tesla that were sold in 2012 are still running. Even the older Tesla Roadster (which have worse battery managements due to it's age) is still good enough .

Thankfully most Tesla doesn't require a battery change after 8-10 years. The Average Tesla require a battery change only around 20-25 years.

@Xander-dx6mw Your own post proved my point: if we assume the 18% of 7+ year old Tesla that you quoted are no longer usable, that would mean that 82% are still road worthy. While your winter range loss (20%) is typical for a Tesla (other BEV had it worse), your lost of range in just 4 years is rather atypical. The average range loss for Tesla user within the same timeframe tends to be around 5%. The range drops slows down over time however, hence where we get the 20-25 year time frame .

@K26650 Actually those projection weren't ' made my Musk or Tesla. In fact it was made by some EV enthusiast with a penchants for engineering and data analysing. They gathered the range loss for all models of Tesla and plotted them. They find that while the range loss for Tesla follows short S-slope and slows down over time . This is how e get the 20-25 years time frame for the battery. Of course this doesn't take into account newer Tesla have better battery managements which slows downs the loss even more or the fact that Li phosphate batteries (whcih Tesla will use is some models) will have even less range loss over time.

@Xander-dx6mw Perhaps you should reach back in time and tell me what is the percentage of Ford, Chevy, and Dodge vehicle that were running back in the early 20th century when they were at the same stage Tesla is right now. Due to the low numbers of vehicles manufactured and dealing with new ICE technology, I'm sure the reliability is comparable to Tesla at the same stage. You are right, it isn't just about the batteries. Thankfully due to BEV having less moving parts, they needs less maintenance and the automotive component of a BEV tend to last longer than their ICE counterparts.

@Xander-dx6mw No, we are comparing early 20th century ICE to early 21 century BEV. . This is fair comparisons considering the technology for both of them were identical stage of development at that point and had around the same number of vehicle on road. Again the only laughable thing is the idea that you would need to change the battery of Tesla after 8-10 years when real world experience ( even by your own data ) show that it is not the case. Even in your rather unique experience of severe battery degradation (which is again atypical) does not require a battery change. If you really want to go anecdotal then we can sure to find s Avalons that are rendered inoperable within 4-8 years if we look hard enough too. Current battery tech on Tesla do indeed expected to last 20-25 years for most users based on test and projection. This is far more realistic than than absurd idea that you would need to change your battery every 8-10 years. .

@pogo1140 An electric motor can literally runs for millions miles before it needed to be replaced changed. Tesla actually run a test (there are even video of this) where they run such motor (and gearbox) for 1million miles ( basically running it non stops for) without any parts change at all. I am willing to bet that your 1986 SAAB won't last that long. That after considering That the that you art least replaced few major components (chain/belt eg) in 36 years. Any mechanic would tell you that a person who said their 36 years old ICE never have any of its drive trains parts replaced is a liar.

You'll be buying a new ICE way before you need to change to a new battery. On top of that batteries price is dropping every years. The guy was just unlucky that he bough a used Tesla with a dud battery. We can easily find just as useless 8 years ICE cars with busted drive train . As you said, that Tesla offers if he bought new. He bought a second hand Tesla with a thirds party battery., you can obviously see why that won't fly.

@pogo1140 Oh, you mean timing chain/belts that need to be replaced very 120K miles (best case scenario) . Yep , that sounds like the 14-17 years typical lifespan of an ICE. Still not the 30 years claimed by some people here and less than the 20-25 years for a Tesla battery change . As for electric motors , Tesla' electric moor have been shown to run over 1 million miles without needing to change any parts, so much for your claims about that that. I doubt nay ICE can run as long without any parts change. Another thing : Tesla electronic components failing, if you bother reading the reports about that you would realise that those failure were related to non drive train electronics such as for climate control. Teething problems from ramping production that is being solved..

@pogo1140 Again, if you are being honest you would admits that all of them have many of their part replaced over years. It is practically impossible for any ICE to survive the maintenance schedule (or lack of schedule due to how little maintenance they required) of a Tesla .Not even your Toyota Corolla ( which still needed oil change). Still congratulation on the Corolla for matching the Tesla threshold of 3000K-500K miles.

@Neojhun Well , good news is Tesla batteries are expected to last 20-25 years before needing replacements. That is even before Tesla introduces Li phosphate batteries that last even longer. Oh, they are good reasons why Li ion replaced NiMH in the first place.

@Neojhun Those 20-25 years are projections based on test and available data. Of course It would be impossible to know how accurate they are as at this point as there are too few "old" Tesla around. Take not that the projection does' not take into account "heavy use" and "abusive" level of punishments.

@mutiracialbeatdownPB That is because a 30yeasr old gas car had most of its drive train and engine component changed over time. I bet that the 30 years old gas car doesn't have the same cylinder, valves, belt/chain or other necessary parts as when you bought it . Try running that same gas cars without any parts change in 30 years and I guarantees you that it will have far more power loss and range range loss, that if the car can even run without new parts in 30 years.

Let me guess : that regular maintenance does includes changing broken and worn down component such as valves, cylinder and chains/belts ( which needed new one very 10-100K miles) . With a BEV, you do not need to do any of those. The motor on BEV can last longer than the engine of an ICE without needing to ever swap parts and the battery currently only needed changing after 20-25 years . BEV require far less maintenance and new parts in their lifetime than any ICE, heck BEV don;t ' even need any oil change for starters.. Try driving your cars while providing the same level of maintenance as a BEV (not even an oil change) , I can guarantee your car would be kaput less than a few of years. " I have owned BMWs with over 150,000 miles that purred like a kitten. I owned a 1972 Chevy truck that did its job no problem. @tomjackson4374 Again, you are are ignoring my question: Can you honestly say that no ICE car need to change components like (valves ,pistons or in most cases timing chain/belts) or even an oil change within 30 years of usage or the ICE vehicle would still retain their performance and range without those changes in 30 years ? And 150K miles? A person who reaches 150k miles in 30 years only drives an average of 12.7 miles a day., The Average American drives at lest twice that distance daily. LOL, glorified golf carts. Tesla have been smoking ICE vehicle in terms of performance (tell me again the 0-60 time of your car? ), safety, and even cost of ownership (tesla have lower cost of ownership a a an ICE that is 10K USD cheaper). It only Achilles heel at this moment is price, once they reach price parity (experts believed b y 2025) than no one would even want to buy any ICE vehicle. The fact that you mentioned how used Tesla retain their value better than any other vehicles shows why you should own own: they have better resell value.

A ten years old car needed at least a belt/chain change or it won't even run at all. Tesla needed none of that and would still keep running. " You won't get a Tesla for under 10K but there are used BEV out there that fist that price range. Heck, if you drive only 13 miles ( or double that) a day, there are quite a number of second hand BEV that are 10K or under. On top of that, you spend less on gas and maintenance for those BEV. "For me, I don't trust the batteries and if they go out for me the car is totaled." The same goes for an ICE, of the engine or even gearbox went out than the car is just as totalled.

@tomjackson4374 Transport Evolved (and other EV channels) did a better job a this. They explains unless you travel more than 100 miles daily, you can get a good secondhanded BEV at around 10K.
