@sebforce1165 Yes, but during the height of the Cold War space race both governments were willing to gamble with live to one-up each other. Their safety records make Ocean Gate look like the pinnacle of responsibility .

@sebforce1165 Again, that underline my point all along: prioritising progress and expediency over safety have always been a thing regardless if it private or government programs , especially in space exploration . Eventually those will result is better safety standards, but that usually happens after a tragedy . Ironically, until Ocean Gate, deep sea submersible industry actually have better safety records and precautions than state funded space industry.

@madtabby66 Not my point. My point was previous space exploration effort were more bloody and rather reckless in retrospect.

To be fair, colonising Venus might be easier than Mars. Look up NASA' HAVOC proposal .
