I think the explanation here is self-contradicting. When we talk about convergence, we talk about a property of sequences, not a property of numbers. The series is just a sequence defined in a specific manner relative to another sequence. The series is also known as the partial summation of the reference sequence. Hence, to say that the series converges is to say that the sequence of partial sums converges as a sequence, which is to say, this sequence of partial sums has a limit. The series is not the limit itself, because the limit is not what does the converging, the limit is what the sequence of partial sums converges to.
