It was not a decision. Gabriel left the band. They were forced into looking for a new singer. They even advertised and auditioned quite a few singers before deciding to move Collins from the drums to the mike. It worked out well for them financially. It might never have happened if Gabriel hadn't gone solo.

The first 2 albums with Colllins as the singer, A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering, still had the same feel as Gabriel era Genesis, but you could feel a change in the style of music. However, when Steve Hackett left, it became the real Collins era band. That's when some started to cynically call them the Phil Collins Trio.

The style of music was so different then, that it was like a completely different band. Collins was the drummer, then and an excellent one at that, and did backup vocals. This version of Genesis was the one that I first heard and the one I much prefer although Collins might have the better voice. Gabriel seemed to give more of himself and complemented what the song was trying to convey.

I gotta agree with you. Loved the old Gabriel stuff, myself. I went to see Steve Hackett do the Genesis Revisited tour. Really great. Recommend it highly, if it ever goes your way.

Genesis was gaining world wide popularity with Gabriel. He decided to leave when they were at the point of really making it big. There is no way to know how popular they would have become with Gabriel. It's not as if Gabriel was a complete bust after he left. He's won Grammys, MTV, Golden Globe and more awards and nominations. The guy was a huge success on his own. And I still prefer Gabriel era Genesis. Collins era was more pop music and I might never have become a fan if Genesis had started out at the Collins period. Actually, I doubt it very much.

Didn't have near the impact that the Beatles did on the Ed Sullivan Show. Not even close. It was a turning point in music. It's one of those things you'd have to be there to fully get it.

Which doesn't make a lot of sense because their music was so varied. The Beatles of 65 sounded a lot different than the Beatles of 67 which was different than 69.
