@Alexis Massey He can speak on anything that he wants. It doesn't make him right and it can be just plain stupid. Comparing an NFL player, who's making more money in an afternoon, then the rest of us do in a year, to a slave is stupid. He has the right to say stupid things and we have the right to tell him that it is stupid.

@dubnation5824 What incredible nonsense. Not one person in the NFL is a slave. Not one. They can leave the game any time they want and some have. They're not forced to play. Ever. They're doing what kids do in high school for fun in parks and empty lots and getting paid huge money for it so they can spend their lives in a life of ease and freedom. I see your problem. You are filled with envy. You're one of those guys that is continuously looking at everyone else's pile and hating them for having more. You're a Marxist, whose goal is to make sure that everyone has the exact same size pile and every assessment you make involves that comparison of assets. The one with the biggest pile, is automatically the bad guy. It's ideological obsession inspired by envy. You don't care about mitigating suffering, you want EVERYONE to suffer like you believe you're suffering. It's a rot that comes from within, a rot that inspires hate to the point that you believe that working hard and being of value to society is pointless because society is against you. You have no concept of the realities of life. You only see that others are better off than you and that pisses you off. It's a sad way to live and it wouldn't be so bad except it's people who live that way that have caused a great deal of suffering in the last 100 years. It's what drove the Soviet Union, Red China, Cambodia, Venezuela and the horror of what is now North Korea. Strangely, it drives you in such a powerful way that you can't even begin to see that the poor in the Western, Capitalist countries live better than people have ever lived in human history. All you know is that someone has more than you do.

@dubnation5824 You've destroyed me? You've called me names. That school yard tactics. "You're a deluded fool" isn't destroying anything. It's what a 10 year old does when he's reacting in an emotional manner. A debate isn't about calling the opponent names and hurling insults. It's about examining facts and using references and logic to make a point. "You don't know the troubles I've seen" isn't a debating point. It's an appeal to emotion. It's the tactic of the intellectually weak.

@dubnation5824 That was the most incoherent, rambling, profanity laced rant I've read in awhile. The grammar was incredibly bad. My 12 year old grand daughter could have written a more intelligible piece than that 2 years ago. I find it very difficult to believe that you're an academic of any kind, let alone an historian. You've done nothing but use insulting language and not one word of it presents a clear and concise rebuttal to anything that I might have said or implied. It's a rant filled with hate and vitriol and not one that one should ever be taken seriously over the internet. However, when meeting face to face, I'd be concerned due to what appears to be a personality which could be extremely dangerous and unpredictable. You're a little out there.....a lot out there, actually.

Money is a convenient means to trade or negotiate for the things that we need to sustain us, like food, water, clothing and shelter, the very basics of life. Every high end species needs some of these things and our fragility demands that we need more. In reality, we in the west, live a life of comparative ease. The poorest of us live better than even the richest did 500 years ago. We live longer, have better health, live in homes that keep us dry when it's wet, warm when it's cold and cool when it's hot. We live in a luxury that would make people like Henry VIII and Elizabeth I gasp in amazement and envy. I'm a retired, almost 70 year old man, living way below the poverty standard for my country, yet I never worry about the basic essentials of life. In fact, I'm leaving for Cancun for 10 days in a 5 Star resort this weekend and last year, I was in the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic. I'm living a life that wasn't even a dream in medieval Europe. You want to wallow in misery and envy, that's your choice. I prefer to appreciate just how lucky I am and enjoy the only life that I'll ever have. It's not always easy and the work was hard at times, but I am fully cognisant of the special times we live in. Times that so many many so cavalierly complain about and want to destroy. They have no idea what they might lead themselves into.

David Hutchins It's nice that they've apologised for the role of the African Kingdoms but I don't see it as necessary. It wasn't them. It was their ancestors. Not one of us should be held accountable for what our ancestors did because there isn't a person on the planet that doesn't have ancestors that have taken part in deplorable acts. My parents lived through the war in the Netherlands. My mother didn't have a father and was exceptionally poor as a child. She, along with her family, almost starved to death because of the actions of the Nazis. In the sixties and seventies, I worked with guys who were in the military in Germany, as Gestapo and military grunts. I had friends whose fathers fought in Holland in the German military. I don't expect an apology from them. Part of the healing process isn't just feeling remorse. It's also forgiveness. Unless those two qualities don't manifest themselves, the pain will never go away. Forgiveness is just as important as the apology and depending on the person, maybe even more important.

David Hutchins I fully understand how those African kingdoms had been involved in the slave trade long before the trans-Atlantic slave trade. My point is that it's nice that the modern African apologises but that modern guy is no more responsible than I am or you. History is complex. It's better to acknowledge that it happened and move on. Too many people these days want to lay blame. That can be an exceedingly destructive human trait. Blame has a habit of morphing into retribution and that has been catastrophic in history. That's my point. In a way, it's just an extension of what you're saying. The slave trade, in history, is complex and it's too simplistic to just point fingers and yell "GUILTY!!!"

@DreamFactories He was talking about the NFL owners. He likened them to slave owners and I'm not sure why. The players are part of a players union in which they negotiate with the owners to give them a stake in the success of the league. Each player can sign a personal contract with the team if they want or not sign it. They can sign with any team they like after they've been in the league for a fixed amount of years. They can leave the league any time they want and do whatever you want. A team owner may not like an exceptional player to leave but there is absolutely nothing he can do about it. To even begin to compare those owners to the real slave owners of colonial America is a slap in the face to the real slaves of that era. The players union can bring those owners to their knees and even bankrupt some of those owners if they put their mind to it....but they won't. The players aren't that stupid. They know that for them to have success the owners must have success. Notice, he didn't say that about the NBA owners. LeBron knows the reason for his own success and isn't so stupid as to not be appreciative of it.
