  1. In 2013, I was working in a paper converting mill, making toilet paper. We had lots of orders but we ran into a period in which we couldn't get raw paper to make the toilet paper from. It went for on months and the machines sat silent for lack of raw paper. Why? It's because Venezuela had run out of toilet paper and people were rioting and President Hugo Chavez promised to get 5 million cases of to keep the people happy. To keep that promise, he paid over market price and our suppliers sent their paper to Venezuela to make the extra money. That was the first I heard of the shortages in that country. It's only gotten worse since then. Fortunately, our company didn't lay any of us full timers off, promising that they wouldn't disrupt our paychecks but they did encourage us to take our vacations if possible. I know I was grateful for that gesture but I was starting to feel bad for the people in Venezuela. Now, I'm appalled at the situation and at those who can't or won't understand why this tragedy is happening.
