People, in the west, live in the best times and the best places to be in human history. I repeat...IN HUMAN HISTORY. We eat better, have better health care, access to cleaner water, appliances that make our work easier, we're warmer in winter, cooler in the summer, drier when it rains, live longer healthier lives and travel all over the world if we want. We're better off than almost everyone alive 500 years ago. What Henry VIII, the King of England, would have done for a simple TV set. He's have given half his kingdom for just one.
The world has NEVER been fair.....EVER. So, how would you know if we'd be happier if life was fair? It's never happened before and you have nothing to compare to.
As long as you're ungrateful for what you have and are always whining about what you don't have, you will be happy. Happiness comes from within, a decision that you make and the biggest part of that happiness is showing gratitude.....something that you seem to be sorely lacking in. You've set an impossible standard in which to achieve happiness and THAT'S why you would be miserable. You're living an existence without hope.

And what did they have to be happy about in the past? They had issues as well. Extreme poverty, no running water or electricity, almost no health care, short life spans, crop failures, no education, never ending wars and the threat of a world apocalypse due to religious beliefs. They had plenty to be depressed about as well.
Happiness is a mindset. If you don't allow the outside forces get to you, you will find contentment in your life. If you allow the trials of life, trials that we've all had to face throughout all of history, get to you, you will be unhappy and depressed.
