Russian backwardness didn't just extend to their technology and institutions overall, even in Soviet times, but also to their thinking - the way I used to put it to the trolls on Twitter lurking on the "History Ukraine" account was like this - Muscovy was a "suburb" of Kyivan Rus not vice versa, therefore Russia belongs to Ukraine not the other way around! - .they hated that, it brought all the trolls out of the woodwork, lol 🙃

That observation of Russian's commitment to religion is spot on from the observations I have encountered with my wife's side of the family (my ancestry is Jugoslav) who are in Russia, father and step-sisters in Abakan, Cousins in Norilsk, Aunty's/nieces in St Petersburg, none of them go to church or are fully committed to the faith but they all would claim to be of the faith. Contrast that with my wife who goes to church and says her prayers when she has time at home (she's a very busy english teacher online). I was baptised into the Ukrainian Orthodox church in 2018, correcting a historical mistake a felt my ancestors on my fathers side made in Bosnia-Hercegovina hundreds of years ago because of the Ottoman Turks - before they came we all used to be Serbian Orthodox more or less. The upshot is Ukrainians are FAR more committed to their religion than Russians are in general imho, that's what kept them strong over the centuries of Russian oppression, their faith, that religious corner in every household where they could find solace.
