Jake has a point about the army, I used to live in Australia and there the attitude was only the "no hopers" that couldn't get a decent job joined the army, but not so for the Navy or Air Force (RAAF). So it is true in some countries for sure. I haven't lived in Australia for going on 11 years now, I live in Ukraine, maybe the attitude has changed.
