Definitions: Democracy: a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. Republic: a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch.

If USA was a republic, any so called majority in NC would not be allowed to make laws that not only limits the rights and freedoms of a minority, but also makes them 2nd class citizens despite them paying taxes just like the mob rulers among the fundies who hates REPUBLICAN principles so much, that they are willing to throw away the Bill of Rights to impose STATE tyranny over local democracy, where the laws of the republic are meant to protect minorities like the lgbt community and not protect the sensitivities among fundies who wants to destroy the 1st amendment to impose their undemocratic laws that violates the laws of the republic that protects lgbt people. In a democracy, people can make laws that directly infringes on or persecutes minorities. In a republic, the majority does not have that possibility, since they cannot make laws that directly harms minorities or infringes on their rights as free citizens. Seems that your "republicans" do not care much for the REPUBLICAN principles made to protect lgbt people, and not for bigots and fundies to use state violence to violate minority rights Seems that your "republicans" are in favor of mob rule without laws and principles except for a few carefully selected from their religious texts.

This means that fundies like yourself do not have the right to violate federal law to impose unconstitutional decrees in local governments from their state capitol calling it something else than what it really means. But if you are from NC and you live by those standards, don't be surprise in a hike un transgender people being harassed, assaulted, and murdered...By YOUR moral majority. Where does it say in the constitution that fundies have the right to make laws that criminalizes an entire minority in society through their mere existence? How does denying trans people usage of public restrooms according to their gender identity in adherence to the principles of a REPUBLIC? Who does this anti-trans law protect? And why is it that in the most republican states (the old south) are crying most about "liberty" when they have laws against abortion, lgbt people, have the death penalty and think that state government as well as federal government has the right to put you in a cage for smoking a joint?
