Jim20 Castro was never half as bad as your average teabagger congressman whose been taking govt, checks while doing nothing, or obstruct, or ram through unconstitutional policies in the middle of the night.
If Hemingway was a friend of Castro, he couldn't have been all bad. At least not as bad as Louie Gohmert, Rush Limbaugh, Allen West, Michele Bachmann, John Bohner, Mitch McConnell, Ted Cruz and his fascist dad Raphael Cruz and the republican party as a whole In fact, your party in congress have a lower approval rating than Castro. So your party is more hated than a small time dictator with the smallest rap sheet you can imagine if we measure up to what GOP has been up to since Nixon.
I can only imagine hoe you yearn back to the "good old days" when Batista, the puppet dictator made sure to uphold the interest of foreign money at the expense of his own people.

Eric S. I've been to Florida actually.Several times. I was a kid though, but still. Caribbean was sort of a summertime fun time when I was a kid. My step father worked in Norwegian Cruise Line in the 80's. That's when I was in love with USA and everything american. But I didn't notice many Cubans there. But I imagine that the first wave of Cuban refugees were a bunch of Batista and mafia cronies, and other RWers.
Why don't you have as much concern for the peasants living under RW banana republics funded and supported by CIA and military for decades? Castro's atrocities are miniscule in comparison to the US. supported Pinochet regime in Chile. Or what the US government is doing to it's own people. How many have you in prison now? And how many for weed? 700 000 last time I counted. What I find ironic is when USA condemned USSR as an oppressive regime, Nixon went to war on drugs, and inspired John Lennon to write John st. Clair after the man got sentenced to 10 years for two joints. Today, black women goes to prison for defending themselves against violent boyfriends, and white people go free when killing unarmed black kids.
As far as imprisoning a writer or two in Cuba is repulsive. I am a writer myself. But look what you are doing to your own journalists and truth tellers? Look what you want to do to Julian Assange, and Glenn Greenwald! Look what you have done to Chelsea Manning!
But the notion that Castro is Satan himself, and then go on an unforgiving boycott for decades against him for a handful of political prisoners?`Hell! You have more of them on Gitmo! Castro have survived 9 presidencies and 6 presidents. He's survived attempts to assassinate him. He's got a higher popularity score than your own government. He's been pointing nose at USA and inspired other countries in Latin America that USA so arrogantly have called their backyard. You have lots of cheap goods from there thanks to your governments support of oppressive regimes ruled by a Castilian elite of old nobles. Like Raphael Cruz
And now, a president in a small country that once was ruled by a pure Fascist dictatorship is showing how both Christianity and socialism works in practice. The president of Uruguay. He has legalized marijuana and gives away 90% of his salary as president. He's also an Atheist.
Are you serious about USA or Americans in general calling themselves "liberal " or "conservative" are in any moral position to cast judgement on other countries that does not dance after the toons of Uncle Sam, while spouting the eternal meme of "American exceptionalism"...?
Hold my holier than thou syndrome!
This is one of the reasons why you are no longer loved around the world. That is one of the reasons why I look upon USA with a bit different eyes than from before I went to Kansas as an exchange student at 17, 25 years ago!
And from my perspective, as one who thought that all this christianity and fake "school spirit", the nationalism, this romantic crush on a constitution that the few seem to have read, and fewer seem to understand., was a bit weird, now you seem to have lost your marbles completely.

***** Lot's of misconceptions about Socialism. I have lived in a social democratic country with a constitutional monarchy. Compared to all countries I have been to, Norway is ranked on top 10 on living standard, social welfare, healthcare, economy, and freedom of the press. However, like most travelers, I think that Norway as my own country is a lovely country to leave.
We have multiple party system, with two main blocks, the left and right, and the center as balance for political horse trading.
Now, we have a RW government, seeking to slash welfare programs, lower the welfare rate, give tax cuts for the rich, release the long awaited segways, and banned begging on the street (probably to make room for rich fat lazy segway drivers). We have one particular tax evader to Cyprus who demands that the Norwegian navy protect his oil tankers.
Norwegian politics may not be as entertaining as yours, but it's picking up :-)

Zen Marshall Dead? We here still make money and spend money.
And we have a public healthcare sysem.A bit long winded and a lot of silly red tape, but still we are all entitled to healthcare that works. Now, in Norway, our RW government wants to cut down on social welfare, healthcare, and even centralize it as if it was Soviet union. They give tax cuts to the rich, and will from next year outlaw poor people by banning begging on the street. But they are against the "nanny state" . We can now buy more on tax free!
And we can ride segways where the beggars from Romania and Bulgaria (gypsies) used to sit!
And in the name of national interest, they want to sell out corner industry from government to foreign private interests. We will soon no longer own our own wealth and natural resources.
As far as the rest of Europe goes, I think you are painfully ignorant about the facts. I know you are.
During the last 10 years, I have been living and working in 5 different EU countries. This is what's wrong with two of them.

http://bohemianwriter1.wordpress.com/2013/12/04/whats-wrong-with-greece/
The problem in these countries are not the welfare system, but LACK of such. Tax breaks for the rich, for the church, for corporations, and tax hikes on everybody else while they cut down on welfare programs.
As far as what's wrong with USA, the list is endless. And what seems to fill most of the list are RW policies, and insane lunatics with religious delusions.
I hardly think that you are in the right position to play expert on Europe when you hardly grasp realities in your own country.
