So what moral basis do you have to deny people to serve for who they are?
And what is so moral about joining the military, go to another country and blow up a lot of buildings and people anyway?
I am a veteran from Norway, your NATO ally from the Bosnian war in 1993.
I also support equal protection under the law, and that trans people be treated like everyone else. This means that discriminatory laws should never be up for vote. That's the REPUBLIC part of a democracy. That's the Bill of Rights parts. Where some things are not up for negotiations just to pander to people's random prejudices.
Their needs are not more costly or more immoral than other veterans who gets viagra from the same taxpayer trough. If a trans person is willing to put his or her life on the line for you, then his or her GRS is just your way of saying "thank you" as much as you paying for a new limb for a wounded soldier, the medical cannabis for a poor veteran, or the viagra for traumatized veterans is your way to say...
"I am grateful for your service. What can I do to show my gratitude? Are you homeless? My home is your home! You you hungry and have nothing to eat? Feast on my dime! Are you a transgender person who has tried to escape yourself by joining the army, bullies, harassment and even murder? I apologize for my cisgender brethren and sisters, because they do not know what they do. If I can help you with whatever you need to be happy and seek the American dream, your GSR is the least I can do!"
That is the only duty you have as a fellow human being, an American and as a Christian have to do since the draft no longer exist, and people like you don't have to serve. So be grateful that someone are willing! That's where your prejudices stops at the door.
That is the ONLY thing you should be allowed to say to ANYONE who has ever served, no matter their political opinion, ethnic background, religious conviction (or lack thereof), gender or gender identity. Anything else from a conservative is just hypocrisy.
The difference between you conservatives and the trans people who chooses to serve, they are willing to put their bodies on the line for whatever cause you think they fight for.
See. Trans people have served armies for decades, ney, centuries already. It's only in the last 60 years medical procedures and science has been able to start mapping and documenting the transgender part of the population. And what they are finding, is that there are far more transgender people or gender variances than previously thought.
Trans people serving in the military is not any problem. It's the conservatives who makes it into a problem. Using economy and morality as crutches for their prejudices based on ignorance.
So your problem is to find a moral foundation for the war crimes committed by Christian soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan in the first place before you can start talking about the morality of allowing trans people to put their lives on the line for your so called freedom and do something you obviously are not man enough to do: Fight for some failed ideal called American Exceptionalism!
Your other problem is how you can find moral ground to treat transgender veterans worse than non-transgender vets. As if their service was less worth. As if their killing of civilians are less moral than when cisgender fundies does it.

Not about mental illness.
It's about how the biology of the brain does not match the body it inhabits.
The "illness" is GID.
The depressions and suicide thoughts are not ,merely caused by GID, but by outside influences. Like attitudes from bullies, bigots, religious zealots, harassement, fear of being themselves, assault, sexual assault, violence and even death. THAT is what causes so many trans people to consider suicide. It's especially bad some if these things occur in the transgender person's own family, where their parents become their first bullies.
The treatment is hormone replacement and SRS for those who need it.
The treatment for their depressions is a supportive environment.
That's how they cure the "mental illness" of GID.
So try to put yourself in some other shoes.
Imagine you get a kid who has GID from a young age and is consistent.
What do you do?
Do you support your own flesh and blood, or do you send your kid to some religious "pray the gay away" camp?
Do you shame your child and become a part of the lynch mob, or do you support your child and defend it against bigotry?
