  1. Quagglle It's a paradox. The Roman Empire lasted 500 years (with the republic, it lasted 1000 years). Those 1000 years were anything but peaceful Civil unrest, conquests, uprisings, religious confusion.  Corruption and tyranny. In comparison, the Iroquois democracy lasted for more than 700 years until they were decimated by European settlers who even today have hard times grasping the core principles of democracy.

  2. Quagglle To be fair, they did. For the Romans, it was conquest and access to cheap produce. Another thing, is that the Hellenic democracy was swallowed up by the Roman Republic (soon to be morphed into a dictatorship).
