Gray Cat Poverty went on the rise after Reagan pushed his "trickle down" economics. And it doesn't matter how cheap things get when no one can afford them anyway because they just lost their jobs to under paid sweatshop workers. I went to school in Kansas. I was once in love with America. That love has faded after that year in conservative Kansas. Besides, many of us have family who once went over. My great grandmothers brother John went over at the end of the 19th century and settled in Seattle as a fisherman. And the fact that so many US policies are directly or indirectly influencing the rest of the world. Gray Cat How does drug use make you homeless? Drug use on Wall Street is rampid. When they criminalized opium in the late 1800's, they still sold heroin to white middle class women. So explain how drug use makes you homeless. Christians makes laws basically making it illegal to be homeless. 40 cities are making it a crime to sleep in pubic places, sleep in a car and illegal to feed or care for the homeless in any way shape or form. Instead, Christians think their religion is under attack because gays want to marry each other.

In some cases, the heroin is mixed with rat poison just to keep up the weight. So again, how does drug use alone make you homeless and not draconian laws? There's one question I have: If you are convicted of a drug "crime", you lose the right to social welfare when you get out, and it's almost possible to get a job. Now how the hell is that drug addicts supposed to survive in a condemning society seeming to wanting to punish the junkie for the lifetime? Like said, Heroin belongs in the same shelf as Oxycontin and Paracetamol, not on the streets in the hands of "gangs" and profiteers who buy the politicians to uphold the laws while they let them off the hook and persecuting black kids for drug use. Gray Cat May I remind you that all drug laws the last 150 years have been for racist reasons, or a way for the upper class to keep social control over the proles and serfs. Prohibition can be read as a part of that eternal class warfare that the rich and the powerful has fought the poor and "the different" ever since Christianity took power in Europe. The notion of prohibition came with the Church and Christianity. If you think that Rush Limbaugh should be able to get his Oxycontin on the shelf, so should heroin, since that's where heroin started. Drug addicts in Norway are getting Methadone or Subutex. Both heroin based drugs, but without "the buzz". Same poison, and the same death rates. Clean heroin is hardly harmful at all, and one can live a long life with clean heroin. Like the Rolling Stones. They got lab. quality heroin, and they still live. A bit different from the swill that is sold on the street. The give out free heroin to drug addicts in Switzerland. Most of those people are now having normal lives and jobs. Recruitment has fallen by 85%. If you are convicted as a felon, then you go to prison. Almost a million people are in prisons today for cannabis in USA alone. And Rand Paul is a corporate and religious stooge, and a flip floper with not an ounce of credibility in his body. I work against prohibition and drug policies every single day, write article,s about it, and do my research. And toke up my sacred weed on a daily basis just like Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Abe Lincoln did. In fact, I might toke up one right now before going to work :-)

Gray Cat Do not lump taking drugs with criminal activity. There is no link between drug use and criminality in itself. The only thing that links drugs with criminality is prohibition itself, and the artificially high prices that forces disenfranchised people for alternative income. Until a street magazine started in Oslo (Norway) ten years ago, no junkie had a job, was loitering, or committed burglary to feed their habits. When the street magazine started, these people all of a sudden had a legal income, and could rise themselves up from the gutter..with a little help. The whole prohibition in is criminal in itself. These magazine sellers are still being harassed by then police at times. They are still persecuted by the justice system. But at least they don\t do crimes to feed their addiction. Get the heroin (the heroine of all white women who had problems sleeping or some other) off the street and into the pharmacies, and problem is solved. Linking criminality with drug use alone is disingenuous at best. Trust me on this. And if you don't, I recommend you read the statements from the Global Commission on Drug Policy and check their solution. And check out some numbers on the DrugWarClock. As far as lethal drugs being sold, the two most lethal, are legally sold over the counter: tobacco and alcohol. Not to mention the drug companies who pushes out drugs that kills almost 2 million people world wide annually.

One couple escaping the rigid laws of Arizona, Wandering along the canals back to the hotel is a beautiful adventure in itself. I call Amsterdam the Disneyland for stoners. Gray Cat Unless you are a millionaire, you won't loose much in Holland regarding taxes. You'd sill have a "nest egg". Neither in social democratic Norway. We have our whining billionaires too. Thinking that 1.2% tax on their wealth is killing them. Our same government who wants to give tax cuts to the rich, want to increase taxes on the poor, unemployed and disabled people. But that government won't last long, and from 2017 we will hopefully have a government a bit less "friendly" to wealthy donors, and a bit more social democratic in nature.

Gray Cat Cost of living doesn't mean much when the poverty rates on both countries are far lower than in USA. We don't have this huge income gap here, and very few are so poor they don't have a meal or a roof over their heads. There are always some, but from what I hear, USA is turning into a neo feudalist society with a 3rd world standards where religion and corporations dictate terms. Working for Verizon for minimum wage while being forced on foodstamps where a Republican governor wants to dictate where and what you can spend those foodstamps on. I don't want to live in a country where they teach creationism in schools, and healthcare is a privilege only the solvent are entitled to. I don't want to live in a country where religious rights (specifically a warped form of Christianity) trumps civil rights. I don't want to live in a society where money and religion dictates policies and politics, where they cut education for the poor, funnelling those money to the private prison industry. Not the kind of society I want to live in. Don't knock a society you can learn something from. I don't see how much benefit there is for a poor black family living in Florida, Missouri or Mississippi either. Or a poor white family either. The social and economic mobility is in fact greater in countries with more social and economic stability as in comparison to USA. So what special benefits you are looking for living in Europe, I still don't understand. Except that you are fond of money.
