genie0390 I smoke a joint in the privacy of my own home right now. Who am I harming? What is the difference of violence in smoking a joint or swill a quart of booze?

boenrobot "Non-violent drug offenses are illegal because of other people's sincerely held moral beliefs." As are all laws (including common ones, like murder being illegal), so that's kind of a moot point. Law has always existed as a function of society's morals, even though the two are never in complete sync, hence the ability of the law to change." Do you consider a society that imprisons pot smokers and drug addicts like criminals and not patients or normal people mirrors a society with sound morals and strong ethical values? I'm just curious.

boenrobot We're on the same page here. Laws change. Morals change. However, like you said some laws are inherently immoral, if not directly evil. Harry Anslingers drug law is one such example. Legalize all drugs. Read the report that the Global Commission of Drug Policy will present to the UN next year. What I find ironic is how red states, the "freedom and liberty" states are the ones still prosecuting pot smokers with harsh sentences. The "I hate big government" people wants big government off their backs, but won't mind shoving a prong up your arse to check for "criminal" plants that grows in nature and then shoot up your dog and kids if they find anything.
