Ryan MacFarlane The thing is...They were acting exactly according to the Quran by treating strangers as honoured guests. Granted there are violent passages that seems insane if you want to claim divine authority. But perfectly logical if you judge it from an objective, secular perspective, considering the times the people lived under in the dark ages.
Don't know what part of the Quran you have read, but you can't possibly have read the entire book, And whatever you must have read, you must have warped the same way as the conquering desert warriors did.
There is no eternal war fare against anyone who don't subscribe to Islam. You are misinformed. To say the least.
All in all, The Quran has it's strange passages and stranger rules at times. But all in all, the Quran is far more liberal towards non believers than the bible is.
One of my new Muslim friends left the shop every night to go to the mosque to pray. I was sitting in the back of the shop, smoking hashish and getting a herbal cream on my sore shoulder (after having humped around on one crutch in the Atlas mountains earlier in the day).
P.S. I discard the Christian god as hogwash. Islam is nothing but an Arabic and slightly more liberal version of the European Christianity that has spread around the world costing more lives than ever plague epidemic history.
One I already mentioned. Freedom of religion in Islam. "Dhimmi" means protected, and not subjugated. That means that both Christians and Jews were protected under Islamic law. No such thing for the pagans under Christian law in Europe. That's why so many Jews fled Spain in 1492 to Morocco to find freedom of religion there. Under Islamic rule.
Anti-racist. Mohammed said in his last sermon that there are no difference between Arabs and other people. And whomever the other people worship, was no business of his. If Allah wanted the entire world to be believers, it would be well within his power to make us so. But he didn't. Either because Allah is such a swell and tolerant mate, or he plainly doesn't exist. So I gather we can conclude that the words spoken at the time were the words of Mohammed alone. Yet sill more sensible than wild crusaders from the North whom just recently at the time have left their pagan god Odin.
So if you think that only the "devout" Muslims slaughters people at random in the name of his moon god, you are sadly mistaken and horribly uniformed. The most devout Muslims I know of, were the ones I met in the Berber souks in Marrakesh. Not thugs in Syria who could have gotten a job in the US police force or a prison guard at any time.

Ryan MacFarlane "however, that there is a direct line between the behaviour of groups like ISIS and Al Qaeda and the instructions contained in the Quran". What you are indicating is that the muslims treating me as an honoured guest and not an enemy of their faith as a non believer are not genuine muslims` and only extremists are entitled to call themselves "genuine" muslims. Am I understanding you correct? if you are, then they are as genuine as the fundie who refuse to serve gays, but have no quarries about serving adulterers.
I agree that there are vile passages in the Quran as well as a history of conquest and enslavement from Morocco to India. These were better or worse than any other conqueror from Attila,
Charlemagne, any viking raider who responded, the crusaders, slave traders, or any other barbaric tribe figthing against Rome. Or Rome itself. Like any other humans, they suffered from one great weakness. Greed, and lust for power. Using religion as a tool is always convenient in the conquest. However, you will find no place in the Quran that endorses forced religions.
First of all, ISIS and "Al Qaeda" are CIA creations. ISIS conveniently coming in heavily armed doing the bidding of the American agenda - to oust Assad and destabilize the region even further. The latter is a pure CIA op used as a bogeyman for false flag operation around the world, and you have media who screams up about how ISLAM is causing all this ignoring the influence that American foreign policies have had on the Middle East after WW2. Starting with the creation of Israel and the coup against a legally elected Mossadeq in 1953, replacing him with a brutal dictator.
What you and these extremist dimwits misinterpret is that the violence defended in the Quran was based on self defence. That means if you are being attacked either for your faith or for other reasons, you are entitled to self defence. Are you not allowed to defend yourself in America against intruders these days?
The golden rule is universal. And you find it in both Islam and all other world religions.
Consider ISIS, "Al Qaeda", Taliban and Boko Haram to be the counterparts to neo Nazis, KKK, Christian dominionists and other RW militias around USA.
The only thing you are achieving is to legitimize criminals and psychos as legitimate. I hear that people who was mislead to go down to Syria and Iraq want to go home, but the insane leaders won't let them.
