  2. One other note: there are many many gradations of humble community living and “smallness” societies that are anything but communist (in the Marxist and atheistic sense). The apprehension you express just doesn’t hit home for me after living in non communist communitarian societies. Be at peace. Christian’s can be semi poor, mostly happy and non communist all at the same time. See most of Christian history for such evidence.

  8. Good cents my brother! But I really do think martyrdom is detachment in a way that makes “westerners” deeply uncomfortable. Martyrdom is the archetypal image of Christianity. It is the pattern of Christ. That we in the west chafe at it is well… normal. We westerners also literally destroyed our monasteries. See England. It was the plan of “Christian’s” to destroy their monastic institutions. That’s not an idea we should dismiss.
