You’re right about social security not even beginning to keep pace with increased costs. I’m trying to figure out how I’ll spend the $15 raise I’ll have on my SS check.

@elizabethcalef6225 - Not all landlords are bad. I was a very good landlord. The only time I kept a security deposit was on my last tenants who caused $1000s in damage. I could have sued them for the additional damages but I didn’t.

@noreenn6976 - This. Landlord-tenant laws vary from state to state; even cities can have different laws. It can be very difficult - and expensive - to evict someone.

@ - That was a wonderful opportunity and to come out of it with the money to buy a home free and clear made it even better! Congratulations!

I owned two rental homes a few years ago and background checks are essential. However, those checks don’t tell you if the person/people are slobs/destructive. My last tenants lived in the house for just under three years. They caused $1000s in damage. I like the idea of creating intentional co-housing for senior women. The process to accept someone would be more involved than just screening a potential tenant.

@ - Family leave, I believe, is only 12 weeks a year and, if a company has under a certain number of employees I believe the rules are different. Here’s more info: Employees are eligible for leave if they have worked for their employer at least 12 months, at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months, and work at a location where the company employs 50 or more employees within 75 miles. Whether an employee has worked the minimum 1,250 hours of service is determined according to FLSA principles for determining compensable hours or work.

Don’t fall for the replies about “Mr Cox”, those are most likely from scammers.

@ - The $15 a month is what’s left after the part B premium increase is factored in but my supplement plan will probably increase in June and wipe out that $15.

@Outdooracademe - Yet, she’s very fortunate that she and her ex were on good terms and this helped her to keep her home.

@christinenicolulis5192 - My husband and I also took our SS at 62. When he was 62 we calculated the amount he would receive from 62 until age 66. We calculated it would take 11 or 12 years to earn back that four years of SS payments if he waited until 66 ( hope this makes sense).

@leilareggie1826 - I already do that. I keep about $500 in emergency cash.

@susanpuckett6403 - Even then, you won’t know everything. When I had a couple rentals, I did thorough background checks as well as checked references. People had to fill out an application and, if they lived locally, I would drive by their current residence and look for red flags - things like lots of junk in the yard; broken screens/screen door and blinds. I also looked at things like the front door being dirty. That helped me weed out a few potential renters.
