This is the second video I’ve seen today where they used a toy kitchen in their mini van. Such a clever idea.

Carol - Thank you so much for being an advocate and sharing the stories of unhoused people. This is totally unacceptable in the supposedly “greatest country on earth”. I hope Jamie gets housing soon.

Another tip is making sure you keep your tires properly inflated. That can also affect mileage.

And now places like Boise are unaffordable

I really like these old Toyota RVs. This one is gorgeous!
16
I love Vermont! I visited Woodstock when I was there a few years ago. It’s so beautiful!
15
This is totally inexcusable. I have a Facebook friend who used to live in an RV in San Diego. She shared horror stories of vehicle getting towed with all their belongings and the owner’s left with nothing.
12
Thank you, Carol, for highlighting the plight of so many struggling families. I live in a very rural part of eastern Oregon. I know we have homelessness here but due to the attitudes of some people, I think they try to keep a low profile. When a group came together to open a warning station here (it can get down to 0° here in winter), the opposition was unbelievable. Due to the actions of a few business owners, the station wasn’t able to open one year.

What a unique shape and absolutely gorgeous interior! Thank you for your service, Shannon! My son and daughter-in-law are both retired military (my son is medically retired and my DIL just this month retired from AGR full time in the guard (23 years). They have gone on a few trips sponsored by ex-military groups. Those programs are so amazing. For anyone interested, there are those special locks that you can get to protect all the doors on a van. They’re great for when you are away from the van.
9
Her van is truly amazing!

I think this should be shown or read to all kids in school (starting around 5-6 grade). I can tell you where it definitely wouldn’t be allowed - in those same states that kept slaves.
8
Same with me.
7
Can you start a Go Fund Me for them?
7
Here’s a question, Nick. Why are property taxes on the east coast so high? I see a lot of Facebook posts from a page called Cheap Old Houses. A lot the houses are on the east coast. The prices are really low but property taxes are absolutely ridiculous.
7
You have a very cozy set up, Helen.
6
I had contact with her a few days ago so I know she’s OK. I probably would have texted her or left a message on her phone.
6
What a wonderful story. Kind of reminds my of my late father and my stepmother. She had never camped before meeting my dad. He not only got her into camping, he taught her to ride a motorcycle. For their honeymoon (both were in their 40s), they each rode a motorcycle from Seattle to S California. Later, they would live in a tipi for several months on land they bought.
6
When you save a dog, they will be loyal for life. My late ex-husband rescued a German Shepherd who had been chained up for years. Rumbler knew he had been saved and he never wanted to be out of sight of my ex. He would cry if he could see my ex but not get to him.
6
What a great idea to find truck stops along the route and prearrange being able to stay!
6
Oh my goodness, Carol. How frightening! It was probably just some immature, inebriated jerks with nothing better to do. I hope they are caught. That poor woman. Along with her window, her sense of security has also been shattered. Sending healing vibes her way.
6
I wish I was ready to buy! Wow!

Until our so called leaders make it a priority to built truly affordable housing, this problem will continue to grow. When cities/counties/states make camping on the streets illegal, where do you think the homeless go? I would bet that the vast majority of homeless didn’t want to end up on the street. This problem has very little to do with the border. Do you not think that many of these people lose hope and turn to drugs and alcohol? If our “leaders” had addressed this problem early on, it wouldn’t have gotten this bad.

Wow, Carol, I’m impressed that you can drive 500 miles a day. A few years ago I had no choice but to drive almost 500 miles in a day. Fortunately, I was headed home so I could just collapse for a few days once I got there. However, it took my back a few weeks to recover. Glad you and Lindy got onto smoother ground.
5
Good for you, Carol. I’m so tired of the entitlement attitude of so many people these day. I hope you and Lindy have a fantastic trip!! I live vicariously through your channels.
5
I started drawing my SS three years after my husband started drawing his. I was automatically given an increase because my check wasn’t 50% of my husbands.
5
This is partly why, back in 1970, the Gray Panthers formed. It’s disgusting that people who work hard to have their home paid off by the time they retire end up having to sell it due to the property tax and skyrocketing homeowner’s insurance premiums. My husband and I bought our house in 2007 and, since then, the property tax has more than doubled. Add to that the increase in homeowners insurance, and those two combined are more than our mortgage payment.
5
Just one more reason to avoid congested cities.
4
I didn’t know you travel with a dog. Cuddles is a cutie. I’m glad you were able to work this out for cuddles. The heat in the SW has been unreal. One suggestion on the venting tube. If you wrap, say, a lightweight fleece blanket around it, it will block some of the heat that comes off the vent tube.
4
She’s amazing. More power to her! I’m too claustrophobic. So many questions! How does she dress/undress in the car? Maneuver herself to go to the bathroom? She’s fortunate her son can work on the car. My son had one of these and he had so much trouble finding people to work on it. Even getting new tires was difficult.
4
This seems like a perfect set up.

@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 - The merger is being fought for that very reason.

I watched a documentary awhile back called “Half Homeless: Living in Cars” . I think a lot of it was filmed in San Diego. I think I prefer the term unhoused. To me, if someone doesn’t have the basic necessities for living (a place to cook and care for one’s hygiene; a place to sleep comfortably); a place that feels safe and protects one from the elements. If someone lives an RV with those necessities, they just don’t have land with a fixed address. My heart breaks for the people living in makeshift shelters they leave them vulnerable to the weather as well as being easily victimized.
3
@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 - Thanks, Carol.

Lindy addressed this in one of her videos, too. People need to mind their own business!! We’re living in polarized times. It’s sad. I can’t imagine acting the way some people are acting.

Von’s is part of Albertson’s now, as is Safeway, and their prices are absolutely ridiculous! I needed some clam juice but Walmart was out (price there is $2.43 a bottle) so I stopped at Safeway and the same brand and bottle size wax $4.49!! Now, Albertson’s wants to buy/merge with Kroger. If that is allowed to happen, that means they will control a large part of the grocery stores in some regions.

Congratulations, Dr Grande! I eagerly await your daily videos. Robin Williams is my #1 comedian/actor. In my mind, he was one of a kind and I doubt I’ll see another person like him in my lifetime. One of the most touching videos of Robin is when he spent time with Koko, the gorilla. It brings tears to my eyes. One “comedian” I’m glad you didn’t include is Andrew Dice Clay. Yuck.

The food there looks so yummy!!! One of the downsides of living out in the boonies here in eastern OR is lack of awesome food like this. My husband and I rarely eat out because, as he puts it, “Why eat out when my wife makes better food”?
2
It’s a sad commentary on life today but it’s not worth the risk confronting people. Even with the kindest approach, you never know who is easily “set off”.
2
This may sound depressing and conspiratorial, but I honestly think that the PTB really want low income people to just die. They create laws that make it difficult for those without a decent amount of resources to survive. With robots set to eliminate millions of blue collar jobs, there will only be more and more poor people with each passing year.
2
That poor little girl. What makes people, especially her own father, be so cruel and twisted. Even though this case caused new laws to be created, I can remember back in the 1960s, cases of child abuse weren’t treated as strongly as cases where an adult was killed. Child abuse (both physical and sexual was often just dealt with within the family. Police seldom got involved.
2
So many rude and obnoxious people these days. Add to it all the theft and they’re going to ruin it for everyone. I’m sorry that happened to you.
2
Sounds like that person is envious?

Thank you, Carol, these are good lessons to live by. I used to always compare myself to others and believed I wasn’t “as good as” other people who had a better life. I grew up poor and struggled throughout my 20s as a single mom. I often felt less than. Then I read Philippians 4:11 “Not that I speak of want, for I have learned, in whatsoever state I’m in, there I will be content”. It really helped me to stop comparing myself to others and to be content with the blessings I had already received.
2
Thanks for sharing this, Carol. Procrastination is my biggest issue. I sometimes wonder if it’s a fear of failure or a fear of success.
2
Woof-woof. Woof-woof-woof-woof. Woof!!

Thank you for covering this story, Dr Grande. I hope YouTube changes their policies surrounding channels that exploit their children. Today (Tuesday) is Huxley’s birthday so he’s five now. Myra herself called it “rehoming”. I just learned today that even state officials have no idea where Huxley is and have opened an investigation. I just hope Huxley is in a safe, loving home and has the chance to have a happy life.
2
I think blocking them was the right thing to do. They sound like someone who didn’t really want an honest answer, like you said, they just wanted to push their opinion. The best thing to do with people like that is to not engage.
2
Here’s a question for you, Nick. Have you thought about buying an RV for these trips? You wouldn’t have to worry about hotels then.
2
@manfredmann2766 - True but it can probably be written off on his taxes.
2
Just so people know - that story of migrants displacing homeless Vets is false. I guess I can’t post a link here but just search YouTube. You’ll find the story.
2
The main reason I couldn’t live in the south is the humidity! Ugh. Oh, and I’m a flaming democratic socialist, so there’s that…..
2
No one should ever be forced to choose between food or medication. We need universal healthcare like the rest of the industrialized world. My husband and I buy a side of beef every fall that works out to be about $6 a pound. I was shocked to see the prices in the stores. I buy chicken and pork when there is a good sale and freeze it but that would be difficult to do for those who live in a van or RV.

Growing up in the Los Angeles school district, girls weren’t allowed to wear pants until the fall of 1969. By the next fall, my dad had moved us to a really small town in the middle of nowhere in Oregon. Prior to the move, my mom lied and said girls were allowed to wear pants to the high school in that town. . I had only a couple of dresses. I was mad when I found out we couldn’t wear pants.

I wonder how many you gained after covering the Stauffers yesterday? You do an excellent job explaining mental health conditions and giving your thoughts on various criminals and celebrities.

I imagine the plantation was quite a treat after the Shack Up Inn. Yikes. Here’s a civil war story. My 3 times great grandfather was an aide to General Sherman in the civil war. My family still has letters he wrote home to his wife. In one letter, he tells a story of wanting to bake General Sherman a pie. They went up to a house near where they were camped and asked “the lady of the house” if they could use her kitchen and cook stove. The woman replied “I’ll have no damn Yankees cooking in my house”. So, they entered her kitchen and carried her cook stove outside. I can’t imagine living where there are tornadoes and hurricanes. It just heartbreaking to see the devastation.
1
Actually, where I live, housing is still affordable and the city has deer wandering all over.
1
You seem to be doing well, David. Getting old is hard but it beats the alternative. My paternal grandma lingered in bed for a few years with a body that was in constant pain due to severe arthritis but her mind was still sharp. My maternal grandmother developed dementia. I used to think about which would be worse - to have my mind but also have a body that didn’t work or not have my mind. After my dad developed dementia, there was no doubt I’d rather have my mind.

If the US hadn’t taken Hawaii as a territory and later a state, the truth is, Japan would have. The school issue is one thing that I feel is unfair. The last Princess left her estate for the education of the Hawaiian children. So, instead of it benefitting all the children, they built the elite Kamehameha school system that only a percentage of Hawaiian kids get to attend. Meanwhile, at least when I lived there, the public schools didn’t have enough teachers and the buildings were crumbling.
1
My husband and I moved to Hawaii twenty years ago. Housing was super expensive then. I can’t imagine what it is now. We moved back to the mainland after 2 1/2 years. I couldn’t adjust (heat and humidity are not something I can tolerate) plus my husband saw the real estate crash coming and felt it wouldn’t be good to still own the house we bought.

This is one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen! What! What! Too funny!

Congratulations, Dr Grande!!!

That was quick, Dr Grande. I feel Rittenhouse is guilty of something - manslaughter, perhaps? Fact is, he was not legally allowed to possess that weapon plus, even without the curfew set because of the riots, he was out past the Kenosha’s standard weeknight curfew for those under 18 (10:30pm-6:00am). His mother should also face charges in my mind.
