I exclusively use Linux, and hate Windows, so believe when I tell you that no one is going to hold it against you for using Photoshop for image manipulation. I think GIMP is a fantastic tool, but no one honest is going to try and imply that it is even close to being equivalent to Photoshop at the professional level. GIMP being free and running natively on Linux is its only advantage over Photoshop. Adobe owns the market and has the resources to make sure it stays ahead, so there is no shame for GIMP, the fact that they are even mentioned together is testament to GIMP's power, but it is not even a competition between the two for anything serious.
