  1. That’s because pensions aren’t sustainable. If you promise a return on a pension, you have to fund it, regardless of what the market does in the time between when it is made and when it is paid out. Some of them may have had promised returns of 7-10%, but the market just hasn’t generated that and as a result there have been massive shortfalls.
