I speak Cantonese as a mother tongue and I did not have to learn Mandarin as Mandarin comes naturally when you can speak Cantonese. Majority of the words are the same just that the tones are slightly different. Of course there are many Cantonese slang words too that many ignorant Hong Kong people do not know that there is such a thing as a local slang they seem to think that it is the proper word in Cantonese. Perhaps these Hongkees are very prejudiced against anything non-Cantonese.
