  3. Kin Fong Yeung No the main housing problem stems from the colonial era and it’s policies. Let me tell you why: 1. The tax structure of Hong Kong is too low and it will not be able to support it’s infrastructures and social services. The only thing funding these is the fact that the Hong Kong Government must sell land to the highest bidder and this is controlled by a few families in Hong Kong. The other factor funding these infrastructures in Hong Kong is the subsidies from the Chinese Communist Party. 2. The land usage policies in Singapore were very effective as it allows the HDB to have a far reach to what they deem necessary so as to allow the use of land for public good. This is totally not acceptable by Hong Kong Standards as it is against the philosophy of the Free Market Economy that Hong Kong treasures so much and what the Hong Kong opposition politicians has been using as an excuse to bring down any development plans by the ruling Hong Kong Government. 3. Hong Kongers will Never be able to accept a higher income tax bracket as they are so engrained in to their minds that this is the best for them. The restructuring of the Hong Kong income tax structure will be met with too much resistance from not only the opposition politicians but also the rich elites and also the urban poor of Hong Kong too. These are the few things that I can see are major obstacles that the Hong Kong governments will not be able to overcome or it may take decades to overcome to achieve what Singapore has. The only way that this can be used to resolve the Hong Kong Crisis would be the acceptance of Hong Kong that they are more integrated in to Mainland laws and system Then this would be able to be done for the benefits of the Hong Kong people. otherwise it will forever remain as it is, just a dream.
