  9. 9:33 $80,000 for first line supervisors in law enforcement? Yes and no (with a bigger leaning towards "no"). If you work for a large department, then yes, but not so much if you work in a more rural area. Some Chief's (way above the first line supervision step stated here) may not even make $80k a year in these low populated areas. In Ohio, most sergeants (we are talking first line supervision here) in a large metropolitan area like Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati (including immediate surrounding suburbs) will get approximately $34 per hour and a lieutenant will get around $38 to $41 per hour. I am sure the NYPD and agencies in California get paid even more. As for making supervisor in the first place; well it is a very competitive process let's not forget. Some factors to consider could be: are you or are you not a member of the "clique" (could be the "unofficial" requirement). As a former law enforcement officer, I can tell you firsthand that I have seen people with ability and good test scores get passed over by the command staff to promote someone with less ability and lower test scores (just because they brown-nosed the Chief all day long providing canned laughter at inappropriate jokes or refilling his/her coffee or refueling the Chief's car) or they needed a diversity promotion for continued federal funding. By contrast, I have known basic patrolmen who made more than $80,000 a year (closer to $100k), but that is because they grab up a lot of overtime (20+ hours EVERY single week without fail on top of their usual 40) and also work off-duty security details "moon lighting." Basically, they have no life outside of work and are always nodding off due to lack of proper rest, along with experiencing failing marriages due to infidelity or just lack of spending quality family time. For me, I said forget it with trying to burn life's candle at both ends to cash in at the bank. The danger is that if you get too tired, you get sloppy with your tactics, which could cost you your life. You need to be well-rested and stay alert for this profession. Just food for thought on this one. Otherwise, some of the other career positions stated here seem to be worthwhile.
