scarface 38 Lewis wasn’t great before Stewart? And how exactly did he win the gold in the Olympics? With his charms over judges? Is this why Tyson avoided him like the plague. Sure, Stewart was pivotal to improve his game but to say that he wasn’t great........no siree!

Iron Mike that’s no excuse. He was younger than Lewis and he should have fought him when he THOUGHT he was in his prime, which he didn’t. Instead he even paid him so as to avoid fighting him. There’s a biographical documentary about Lewis on YT and that was mentioned. Bowe’s attitude and how he ducked Lewis (after losing in the Olympics finals to him - emphatically) shows how good Lewis was.

Vigor Komar You know how I ended up believing that Lewis is the GOAT? I imagined how many fights would Ali, Foreman, Tyson, whoever, would win against Lewis in, say, 10 bouts. I don’t think anyone of those would have won more than 3 times out of 10 (prime vs prime). Lewis was just too big, too powerful, too skillful, too adaptive. Just like he sparred with Tyson when they were very young and eventually he got the best of him in their last sparring sessions. Even Vitaly scores better than the Americans in my book. IMO the Americans (who I otherwise admire and love) are too arrogant when they proclaim they got the best boxers of all time. I don’t think that’s the case. Maybe they can claim they are the best in Basketball and proclaim “world championship” when an NBA team wins their NBA finals (even though they haven’t played anybody else in the world to claim that “World Champions” etiquette - but they are and were, without doubt, the best BB players and teams in the world) but for the history of boxing maybe only in some divisions. I don’t think Ali would have won more than 3-4 out of 10 bouts with Lennox. That to me shows very much who was better and why.

Donald Dailey It’s not me saying it but experts of the time - watch a Lennox Lewis documentary here on YT. If Cus reprimanded Tyson for his performance in their last sparring session , as Lewis said in his interview with Rogan, it means that Lewis did have the best of Tyson. Even Tyson himself has admitted that he’d never have beaten Lewis (“he’s too big, too strong, too good”). Lewis’s opposition was far superior to that of Tyson’s. Where are the Mercers, the Tuas (a very similar to Tyson boxer), the Klitchkos (he shouldn’t have fought that one - he wasn’t prepared for it), even the Rahmans, the McCalls, the Briggs, Grants, Mavrovics, Akinwandes, etc, in Tyson’s resume? In his first 30-40 fights when he built his reputation, as a destroyer of men, there were maybe 2-3 really good fighters. But the best fighters Tyson boxed he lost from. Lewis defeated everyone. Lewis had a superior psychology to Tyson (whom I respect and like immensely) and an overall better package.

Shawnsta 777 you are not telling the whole story. They sparred, Tyson overwhelms him in their first bouts but then Lewis adjusts and peppers Tyson in later bouts that made Tyson very apprehensive in encountering Lewis thereafter. He reportedly paid him big money to avoid fighting him and that was during his prime.

Phillip Clark there’s a documentary that says so (I believe it’s a biographical Lennox Lewis documentary), Bowe ducked Lennox as well and that’s on camera. The fact that boxers avoid boxers that they think they can lose from isn’t news. Many fighters plan their fights strategically so as to maximize future profits. If you get beaten early in your career and the hype around your name goes down, so does your paycheck. It’s as much a game outside the ring as it is inside of it.

Phillip Clark do you seriously believe that in, say, 10 bouts (between them) of a prime vs prime series, Tyson would have won more fights than Lewis? I highly doubt it. Why? Lewis had a lot more weapons than Tyson. A very devastating outside game and excellent inside game as well (very rare for a tall guy like him), he also was a lot more adaptive mid-fight (Tyson not so - he seemed like a 1-geared car) or post fight (for their next encounter), most importantly Lewis was far superior psychologically. That’s how I see both champions’ careers and that’s why I think that Lewis was far better than Tyson (who I like and admire very much - his life and career is a lot more inspiring than almost anyone elses’).

Hugh Mungus blame Tyson for that fight not happening while in his prime. He reportedly paid Lewis to avoid fighting him. Go check the biographical documentary about Lennox. An expert reporter testified that on camera.

Lennox was older and, moreover, Tyson in his prime ducked Lennox (even reportedly paid him) so that's a somewhat null argument.

Phillip Clark it was mentioned that Tyson paid Lewis not to fight him in a biographical documentary about Lewis. The man who said it was an expert commentator in boxing (if I recall well). It’s available to watch here on YT. It makes sense too. Tyson and his managers would want to extend his premium paying fights as much as they could. Jeopardizing a loss to Lewis would have lessened their chances to get big paying days.

Donald Dailey That’s what YOU say, it’s not what the actual participants say. I don’t know what you saw or you liked to see, if Cus reprimanded Mike for his performance that’s good enough. Moreover, Lewis has tapes of the sparring sessions. Maybe one day he’ll release them.
