  1. I guess the Russians were too lazy to break up the asphalt, put down the mines and repave everything back without a trace in 15 minutes. You should offer your services to the Russian high command. You'd still be smarter than most of their generals.

  2. Actually, russian troops were seen retreating from Kiev and Chernigov areas for the past two days. The Russian minister of Defense Shoigu himself said they are redeploying those troops to Donbas now. So actually, it makes A LOT of sense to lay mines when you retreat to slow down the pursuing Ukrainians.

There's an even more apt russian proverb that is key to understanding why Russia treats its own people and soldiers so poorly, which is "beat/hit/strike your own [people] in order to instill fear in others/enemies" (бей своих, чтобы чужие боялись). The twisted logic being that if you are capable of treating badly your own, the evil things you will do to strangers must be truly unspeakable. It may seem a tongue-in-cheek kind of proverb but in Russia it really is not.

  8. Ukrainians get away with this sloppiness because the Russians are even worse at military discipline. A large share of Russian trops are 19-20 year old kids who signed the contract 6 months into their military service and 3 months later they find themselves fighting a real war. A lot of Russia POW now go on record with the sad story of getting an offer of contract "they couldn't refuse" and here they are, lucky enough to tell us the story.

  11.  @Enigmatic.. , personally, I wouldn't be touching them with a 100 ft pole and driving over them either. I do know something of the fatalism of the slav mind, though, and I also know that people in a war zone assess risks differently than on the couch. So maybe for some reason going over them with a car is considered an acceptable risk to those drivers.

  15. It's not the ties or exercise turned to war that demotivated them. It's that they didn't expect any resistance at all. The russian propaganda cultivated for years the illusion that Russian troops will be welcomed with flowers by the Ukrainians suffering under the yoke of corrupted and sold out to the west officials and it will take but a slight nudge to dislodge them and take control at least of the russian-speaking regions, which are exactly the regions that the Russians invaded, north of Kiev, Kharkov, east and the south, above Crimea. So when you expect an American style liberation of Normandy and get Vietnam-style ambushes and trees that shoot at you, your morale is going down really fast. Did you know that russian trucks captured north of Kharkov were loaded with police shields and batons? They were expecting some city unrest at most, certainly not a full-fledged war.

  16. The official govt polls indicate 60-70% support of the so-called special operation. There is an obvious issue of trusting the official sources but even the independent political analysts confirm a very high level of support, certainly above 50%. My own observations, for what they are worth in their subjectivity, is that there's truly A LOT of brainwashed people out there in Russia. I am subbed to a Ukrainian yt channel that posts videos of Russian POWs' phone calls to their parents and it's astonishing that most parents refuse to believe their kids when they describe a different reality from Russian political tv shows. It is also very apparent that soldiers and even officers almost invariably come from poor, uneducated, very provincial mentally and geographically regions and families, most often east of Urals, Altai, Kuzbass, Baikal lake region, far East and N. Caucasus, very remote, rural and depressed areas.
