  1. Nicholas Kellingley That's a very unfocused diatribe. There was never a time when the British people roamed the country pronouncing their freedom to all and sundry. The ordinary man has been under the thumb of wealth and patronage for hundreds of years. You could mention life in the poor house, child chimney sweeps and back breaking long hours in the fields just to survive. All this self congratulatory BS Dan Hannon talks about applied mainly to a few privileged people. But through it all the long suffering Brit has doffed his cap to his betters and gone and fought wars to protect a country that didn't much care for him. And the same is true with Covid, the British people, reasonable to a fault, have reluctantly accepted the restrictions because they care about 'doing the right thing'. That doesn't make them pussies as you allege, just reasonable. However, the government know we have finite patience and good will is wearing thin. As with Brexit, when the public decides on something it usually gets done. That's why the monarchy and the church, once powerful, are now merely symbolic reminders of the past.
