The ADF provides generous housing assistance, ie subsidised live in accommodation and rent assistance with housing. There are also low interest rate discount home loan schemes.

@clubdj13 There is more than just the Sydney and Melbourne markets and as a soldier gets promoted their salary increases. Very few soldiers i knew were single income families. I'm not saying it is easy only that it is doable.

@ Yes what you are describing was not uncommon and when I first joined in the mid 80s we had some diggers on rent allowance as they were single income families. I chose stability over rapid promotion and knocked back some early promotions for family reasons, but I we were lucky in that apart from one posting my wife was employed and in a reasonable well paying job, and I understand that just isn’t always the case for some soldiers. Like I said it requires effort and some particular lifestyle choices, but it is doable. I did 35 years and retired a WO, I’m more than financially secure.
