I did 35 years and am equally proud of this country, but I have personally witnessed some terrible racism in the Army. One particular WO1 RQMS I worked for back in the 90s regularly used the most foul language of boong, coon, and worse when he spoke to one of the Corporal storeman. I approached the bloke and said he shouldn’t be spoken to like that and I would back him up if he chose to take it higher ( I was only a Corporal to). He declined as he said the RQMS treated him fairly it was just his language that was foul. It certainly didn’t set a good example. Maybe I should have taken it higher but I respected the blokes wishes. I know this is just my experience and many indigenous soldiers speak very fondly of their time in the military, but on Operations it was even worse, I don’t know how many times I winced at “Sand nigger”. Most often I would say something, but it got tiring. Another Operation and the soldiers often referred to the locals as “those little monkeys”. Again it was only my experience and you obviously never dealt with any of that so your good luck.
