@rule3039 I asked you question and a simple one at that. You clearly are incapable of answering it. If you don’t understand why then that’s fine. Your reply is revealing but not for the initial reasons I asked my question.

Why?

@lesblack413 You can easily have several SSN without the need for a nuclear power industry. Firstly the two sites identified for the home ports, one other east coast and one on the west coast will be purpose built to be able to maintain SSNs. Secondly the class of SSN we decide on to build in Australia will have the powerplant constructed by either Rolls Royce in the UK or GE in the US. Either way the PWR will be wholly manufactured overseas and delivered into the superstructure here. There is absolutely no need at all for any sort of nuclear industry to exist here in Australia for us to operate a fleet of SSN as they don't need refuelling.

@markrogers4111 Purely economic. The SSNs will be ludicrously expensive and any energy from a nuclear plant will also be ludicrously expensive. A reliable grid is achievable with renewables, storage and gas backup at significantly less cost. I would also argue 12 conventional powered submarines would have been more than adequate to defend our sea lanes and considerably cheaper than 10 SSN.

@markrogers4111 No, we have had blackouts because coal powered generators have broken or have been down for maintenance. At other times storms have damaged transmission lines. Not once has renewables failed to provide electricity when expected. You are misinformed. Secondly, numerous LCOS studies show renewables + viability + storage are cheaper than fossil fuels or nuclear. Thirdly large scale batteries are for harmonisation not storage, household batteries will provide storage. Large scale storage will mostly be hydro. Finally this will all be backed by on call gas generators. I have no idea what reports you refer to but all my data is clearly laid out in the CSIRO gencost report and the AMEO report on future generating viability. This is all supported by LAZARDS LCOE and LCOS studies. You are misinformed.
1
@markrogers4111 Nope LCOS studies also have renewables cheaper than nuclear.

@markrogers4111 CSIRO Gencost report and the AMEO studies both have renewables + firming + storage significantly cheaper than nuclear.

@RogueElementMkII Are you suggesting that concrete and steel are not used in the construction of nuclear power plants?
1
@RogueElementMkII World production in concrete has escalated significantly in the last twenty years, so what?
1
@RogueElementMkII 375 billion m3 and by the time we have used that we can always crush up some sandstone. Surely you have a better argument for the construction of wind turbines than we will run out of sand.
