It was actually in the early 2000s. I remember one specimen that was the Canberra regional shooting trophy. It had been made innocuous and had been completely chrome plated. I almost was almost crying as it went into the furnace.

@JDVHS I personally witnessed the destruction of 60000 SLRs around about 2005. We regularly destroyed weapons at the Wollongong smelter. Hanging on to an ancient weapon though isn’t viable. Firstly the maintenance required and the most important thing is effectiveness. I have used a SLR and they are a buggar. They only had open sights weighed a tonne and almost impossible to hit anything over two hundred metres unless you were very well trained. They had no capability to attach any sort of NFE, laser, light equipment of the type you can add to a EF88. It would take days to get a company of soldiers to pass LF9 and then you would have a significant minority who couldn’t. I seen a a whole company short of a few uncoes qualify LF9 in a afternoon using F88.
