Australia produces on average 7 times more food than we consume. We could easily feed 100 million people and regularly do. We export so much food it significantly contributes to our balance of payments and national wealth.

@AWayOfLiving84 It’s called the free market and capitalism. At the moment beef prices are coming down because farmers are de-stocking because of an expected drought, as is lamb. Vegetables are going up due to large crop damage in the Lockyer valley after a severe storm. Generally grain prices are down a bit due to falling overseas demand. Australia generally produces high quality agricultural products that attract top prices overseas, hence consumers have to pay the same prices here.

@HelenRoll-kh6on Fruit picking is extremely hard physical work and poorly paid. It is suitable for only the young and/or physically capable. It is seasonal and requires working in regional areas where accommodation is difficult to obtain. There is also a history of the industry having very poor working conditions. The vast majority of our fruit pickers that are on specific working visas are from the South Pacific island countries and have been targeted by the federal government. They are almost exclusively Christians.
