  1. Just to add some historical context here. Australia had two subs in WWI both lost. In WWII we did not have a submarine capability and did not have one till we acquired the Oberon class from the UK in the late 60s early 70s. Our experience with the Oberon class convinced us that when replaced it would be with a sub built in Australia because the Oberons had to go back to the UK for deep maintenance. So came the Collins class, problematic at first as we had never built subs in Australia it developed into a fine weapons system. When the decision was finally made to replace the Collins class which our navy always recommended be replaced with a Nuc powered boat neither the US or the UK offered or allowed us to share their Nuc technology, the French did though, the decision was a deseil/electric based on the French Barracuda class nuc, as the 7 to 10 year refuelling presented to great a sovereign risk. So here we are 12 years down the track from when it was first identified 12 subs were required to replace the Collins class and we are back to square one. If not for the nucklehead government we could have ordered Nuc subs 9 years ago and they would probably in service now.

  4.  @hgsert2733  I specifically did not offer comment on why differnt governments made their decisions as this is conjecture only the facts that relate to submarine procurement. ie I didn't comment on the almost ludicrous choice of the Soryu class by the Abbot government which would of happened if Abbott had of remained PM. A sub with half the range of the attack class along with crap weapons and a poor electronic suite and we would have been stuck with them.

  5.  @hgsert2733  No, the Abbot deal was COTS, Soryu class with type 89 torpedos and Harpoon missiles. No modifications. No ability to upgrade to Tomahawk it would have been a disaster.
