@joshuawilson2793 Here in an extract of that speech dated 27 December 1941. “The Australian Government, therefore, regards the Pacific struggle as primarily one in which the United States and Australia must have the fullest say in the direction of the democracies' fighting plan. Without any inhibitions of any kind, I make it quite clear that Australia looks to America, free of any pangs as to our traditional links or kinship with the United Kingdom.”

What an inane comment. The current US administration has fully supported AUKUS and the Australian government’s efforts to acquire SSN.

Removing semi automatic weapons from public use significantly reduced the mass killings in Australia to virtually zero. The murder rate with firearms is 11 times higher in the US than Australia. Don't lecture Aussies about our laws.

@joshuawilson2793 Actually you are factually wrong there. John Curtain, the then PM specifically asked for Americas help in a controversial speech at the time. It was perceived by Britain as bit of a sleight at the time as traditionally our Defence was significantly aligned to British policy and Singapore.

@robbiesheppard3280 While not disagreeing with you, I will point out the Australian government recently sent the US and UK manufacturers a couple of cheques for $billions to assist in speeding up the construction process. The Chinese may very well be building in numbers however from what I have read their technology is not nearly as good. Virginia class subs regularly find and follow Chinese SSBN.

@bigd1558 No incorrect. The data I referenced was on a direct comparison on murders by guns per million population. It has nothing to do with total population. The point is with a culture of gun rights and violence you have a significantly higher chance of being murdered by a person with a gun in the US than Australia. The data is overwhelmingly clear on this.

@joshuawilson2793 Just do an internet search for John Curtin speech December 1941. Glad to be of help.

@jamedmurphy4468 NATO, US, and other allies managed to control Afghanistan with a total force of less than ten thousand plus whatever forces the Afghanistan Army provided, and they could have keep doing so forever if they had of been provided the political will. Trump surrendered to the Taliban and Biden did the dirty work.

How did a comment about the US and Australian alliance get to the point that someone needs to question why the British were fighting the Japanese in SE Asia during WWII? Read a f$%king history book!!!!

@Fire.4Effect To be fair Andrew does have a fair point. The US entered WWII because of Pearl Harbour and it own self interest, we will never know of course but I suggest things may have been a little different if the japs had limited there attacks to SE Asia.
