Yes the CEO of British Tobacco told us the nicotine we were smoking was harmless, the CEO of Exxon told us lead was vital for petrol and did no harm, and the building industry was full of its praise of asbestos.

True, but virtually 100% of a solar panel is recyclable. There are companies in the US and Australia that can do it and make it economically viable. Wind turbines as well can be turned into cement for construction.

@muckman5509 Using green energy they can be minimalised. You seem to be an all or nothing type. " Only the Sith deal in absolutes". That is my nerdy Star Wars quote.
1
@muckman5509 Sith is not a buzzword they are the enemy of the Jedi knights.

@muckman5509 I just looked up buzzword in the Oxford dictionary and it said " when someone uses the laws of thermodynamics in a discussion". On a serious note however you have a wonderful naive and simplistic view of the politics and science regarding reduction of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. Your point and argument has been lost, burning coal or uranium is undeniably more thermally efficient than constructing a wind turbine but it simply isn't the only factor to consider. Just look at the power generation coming online in the last 10 years and into the next 10 years wind/solar v nuclear. You lose. Hint, thermal efficiency is not the only consideration in deciding the future of human civilisation. I hope you're right though and safe reliable low cost well regulated nuclear energy forms a part of the future of power generation.

@George Mann Yes that's exactly what i said. You have just added your political spin to it. Which is just opinion some of which was rubbish. All you managed to do was create a whole lot of strawman fallacies I did not mention. Your comment added nothing of value.
1
@muckman5509 No, your point is from a strictly engineering POV which as wonderful and pure as it may be ignores what I like to think of as reality. As I have said I have no issue with safe low cost well regulated nuclear energy and I would be happy for one in my backyard. It could sit alongside the family of pixies that live up there as well.
1
@muckman5509 I think his point is the proponents of nuclear energy can be a little arrogant, and that arrogance leads to unforeseen circumstances.
1
@muckman5509 You need to read what you write. You asked James Jones what his point was, either honestly or more likely as it turns out somewhat ironically considering my comment in an arrogant sarcastic tone what his point was, and I merely speculated, but that's OK you proved my speculation was soundly based.

@thearisen7301 Yes of course here in the west we have never constructed anything on the cheap that has caused a disaster. It just could never happen. If you believe that I have some apartment buildings in Miami for sale as a great investment.

@muckman5509 More a rammed earth kind of wall.
1
@muckman5509 ????????? good to see you ask questions, it shows you may not be quite so ridiculously dogmatic as displayed in other comments. Good on you.
1
@muckman5509 Exactly, also yes thorium reactors and are they called liquid salt reactors? something like that, make it far more difficult to create weapons grade plutonium but from what I have read it is not impossible, and who is going to decide what type of a reactor a certain country gets? I agree with you there are other advantages to nucs that you mentioned other than just making electricity and in my country the only one we have is for research purposes also doubles up the creating isotopes for medical reasons.
1
@dingliu6302 Yes we all accept oil, gas, and coal while powering the industrial revolution and aiding the advances in technology has had it's day due to the filth it has left in the atmosphere. No one is seriously questioning that. It is the means by which we fix it that we are discussing.
1
@muckman5509 Quite, I'm busy my drug dealer has ensured me the fentanyl that he has cut my heroin won't do me any harm either. The city officials in Flint Michigan were insistent that no harm would come to the peoples drinking water using lead piping either. "What could possibly go wrong" the last words of the Vajont dam manager.
1
@muckman5509 I'll stop funing with you. Nuclear energy has its place but you're just in fantasy world if you think it's the be all and end all. First it's not anywhere near the cheapest. Nuclear comes with a load of regulatory issues and costs which make it expensive in Western democracies. There are security aspects to consider, how do you feel about every other tin pot dictator in Africa or the Middle East having access to Nuclear technology?
1
@George Mann You would need to reference a source for your claim that electricity from Nuclear energy is the cheapest . Everything I have read indicates the exact opposite.
1
@George Mann Reference: US Energy Information Administration. Using LCOE, LACE, and LCOS, the average cost per megawatthour for advanced nuclear entering service in 2023 is $63.10. Onshore wind $36.93 and solar standalone $30.43. There are multiple variables and under the right circumstances Nuclear energy with tax subsidies can compete with solar on a regional level, but your claim that Nuclear energy is the cheapest is an absolute delusion. Yes coal, battery storage, and biomass are more expensive, but jeez get a grip, the only reason it is cheap in the US is because it attracts massive federal government subsidies.

@muckman5509 Here is how it works. Thorium reactors work by breeding Th-232 through Protactinium-233 and into Uranium-233, which is fissile. Pa-233 is a pretty strong neutron absorber, so the MSBR has to extract it from the core once it is produced and let it decay to U-233 away from the neutrons. Once the U-233 is created, it gets fed back into the reactor. So if you wanted to you could build up a little excess reactivity add some U-235 or not and then divert the freshly bred U-233 into a weapons stream to make U-233 bombs. It would be difficult to do this multiple times, but it could be done. U-233 bombs have been tested and they work. If only we all lived in your idealistic innocent world where the only concern was abundant clean energy for all.

Who's truth? your truth? Muckmans truth? or justified true belief?
1
@George Mann so it's your truth we are talking about. Just need to make that clear.

What a wonderful and erudite display of the intricacies involved in a discussion on nuclear energy.
