You would have to ask Peter Dutton about that. I was his party the Liberals who made it illegal.

@paythepiper6283 and the $10 billion in subsidies to the fossil fuel industry.

Can anyone explain why a small government economic neo-liberal party is getting into the electricity business? The Libs and the Nats are going to build and own a series of nuclear power plants. Has the world just gone topsy turvy?

@knight2425 $150 million grant from the NSW government to the coal industry to assist in the maintenance of the coal railway infrastructure. A straight out tax payer cost to keep burning coal.

@knight2425 Australia’s subsidies to fossil fuel producers and major users from all governments totalled $14.5 billion in 2023–24, increase of 31% on the $11.1 billion recorded in 2022–23. $14.5 billion equates to $27,581 for every minute of every day, or $540 for every person in Australia.

@paythepiper6283 Almost the entirety of your reply was factually incorrect. Queensland and NSW state governments both provide significant subsidies in direct payments to the coal industry to support infrastructure and research. $21 million to gas exploration in the Bowen basin $520million to a coal emissions reduction program in QLD $84million in Victoria to a carbon capture program. $102million in NSW to the Coal innovation fund. Federal tax break on aviation fuel $430million, and I could go on. The cost to the environment of all these tax payer funded subsidies is estimated by the IMF at $44 billion annually. Your data is laughably false and no doubt provided by the Institute of Public Affairs.

@knight2425 Gencost report has the cost of renewables + viability + storage at 90% still significantly cheaper than nuclear. The sun is on 24/7 and if you live near the ocean anybody will tell you wind is always blowing as the air pressure between the land and the oceans always varies, it is how our planet works. If you claim the CSIRO Gencost report is not accurate then provide your evidence to support your claim.

@paythepiper6283 So more factually incorrect disinformation. Energy companies using wind and solar currently pay company tax on their profits. It is not my claim of $44 billion cost to the environment it is the IMFs, take your objection up with them. The AEMO has costed the construction of new transmission at $15 billion. The $1.5 trillion number you quote comes from the same report that states nuclear would be to expensive, in fact I don’t think you got a single attempt at any of your opinions even close to a fact. In fact the $1.5 trillion includes the cost of EVs and the entire transmission away from burning fossil fuels (you should have read the report yourself) it is not the direct cost comparison nuclear v renewables.
