Thorium reactors come with the huge risk in weapons proliferation. You can make U233 nuclear weapons from them.

In the last 12 months 200 megawatts of renewables entered the market and 3 of nuclear. Ask why.

@stewatparkpark2933 Yes your correct recently one nuclear plant came on line in the I think in the US and it took 46 years of construction.

@Boskov01 I totally agree there would have been multiple different reasons and causes why delay and construction took that long and obviously this is an extreme example, but I think the average build these days for a nuc plant is around 10 years which is still a long time, compared to how quickly you can get get a solar or wind farm up and running. That’s why I think the market has chosen renewables.

Huge risk of weapon proliferation.

@mystic_miser_1 I have no problem with the engineering or safety of thorium reactors. The problem is if they are everywhere then every doggy little tinpot tyrant potentially will be able to make nuclear weapons and that is very bad.

@SC-yy4sw I never suggested there was. Currently as I understand it, and I’m no nuclear engineer, you need a breeder reactor to enrich uranium to 90% U-235. Not everyone has these breeder reactors and so countries get there weapons grade uranium by other means. It is a difficult process fraught with all manner of political and economic consequences. U-233 which can be bleed of a thorium reactor doesn’t require enrichment. U-233 bombs have been tested and work. All I am saying is that with thorium reactors popping up everywhere then clearly there is a risk they will also be used for illegal purposes. This is just accepting the reality of life. It isn’t necessarily unsolvable and would require significant regulation and that adds cost. This is just something to consider.

@SC-yy4sw You have a much better knowledge of of how nuclear energy works than me, but my point is still valid.
